“Ce que je fais, c’est un peu partir à la recherche de quelque-chose d’indefini. Tu creuses pour chercher. Alors tu peux creuser, moudre le vide, creuser dans l’espace, creuser dans la terre, creuser dans le ciel... Creuser dans ta propre tête à la recherche de je ne sais pas quoi, et tu finis bien par tomber sur quelque chose... moi je suis tombé sur la musique que je fais!”
- Ghédalia Tazartès, interview with David Fenech, 1997 |
Pauze festival has a fascination for eccentric daredevils and obscure or underestimated geniuses. This year this manifests itself in an evening with two important European avant-gardists: an autodidact and an academic. Their compositions are crafted from a totally different background, but both operate within a rather unconventional framework. With Avant-propos we hope to show both the contrast and the resemblance between these master minds. |

REINES D’ANGLETERRE feat.
Ghédalia Tazartès, él-g and Jo T. [fr]
Ghédalia Tazartes is an avant-garde musician who has continued to delve into his own unconventional way of composing to this present day. Ever since '77 he explores musical repetition, cut & paste techniques, concrete sound and the possibilities of the human voice without fearing any direction or genre. From balladry to noise eruption, it all belongs to his sound pallet. In his fascination for absurdity and the human voice he found the young Parisian balladeer él-g (KRAAK), and his interest for noise and deconstruction led him to Jo Tanz (Placenta Popeye, Tanzproces). Together they have formed the trio Reines d'Angleterre. After their first gig on The Colour Out Of Space festival in Brighton, the Pauze festival proudly introduces you this new, brain-melting combo.

REINHOLD FRIEDLs [ger] NEO-BECHSTEIN
The Neo-Bechstein is a piano (manufactured in 1929) with a built-in gramophone and radio. It is, in fact, a vulgar and commercial product with only five remaining copies remaining in the whole world. Artistic director of the Zeitktratzer ensemble, Reinhold Friedl, who is known not to shun away from the odd experiment, endeavours to transpose this kitsch instrument to the world of serious musical practice. He does so in collaboration with sound engineer Sukandar Kartadinata, who for this occasion developed special hardware that enables spatialization of the piano sounds and sends them out to a multi-channel system. In this modernized setup, the Neo-Bechstein is the ideal instrument for playing so-called sound/space compositions. |
