Fourth installment in our split 7” series, God Damn I Hate the Blues , presents splendid new work from Amen Dunes, Marisa Anderson, Ignatz, Nathan Bowles, Warm Climate and Bridget Hayden.
Damon McMahon comes up with a brilliant interpretation of an old Ethiopique traditional, blending his typical Amen Dunes style with a far-out etnic melody.
Those who have heard Marisa Anderson’s ‘The Golden Hour’ know what to expect: in the vein of her lp, her contribution ‘Heat Lap’ is a rough and moving delta styled improvisation on lap steel.
Our hero Ignatz keeps on surprizing. After his fourth album ‘I Hate This City’ he started to focus on country music. ‘She Gets All She Wants’ is the result. Probably one of his most melodic workouts to date. Different from all his previous work and yet again so recognizably Ignatz.
Also Bridget Hayden presents a new side of her work. No drilling drone-riffs here but a hazey folk song, putting the Robert Burns poem ‘Aye Fond Kiss’ to music, with her guitar and voice drenched in reverb.
Nathan Bowles is one of the three Black Twig Pickers. He dreams about Alabama girls alot. Classic style banjo core.
Warm Climate is Seth Kasselman and his band. ‘Tourmaline Witches’ appeared on the ‘Pigeon Brides Weigh In’ cassette on Stunned Records. Seth jams like Bobb Trimble on acid, or Marc Bolan on ketamine. Seth doesn’t like Bobb Trimble, but we like Seth all the same.

On July 6th 2009 KRAAK set up a show at Kung Fu Necktie. The Flemish Primitives met the Philly Elite: Jack Rose, Meg Baird, Kurt Vile and U.S. Girls.
KRAAK loves Philadelphia. In recent years Marshall Allen, Bardo Pond, Espers, Clockcleaner, Fern Knight and many other artists climbed the KRAAK stage. With some of them we developed a modern internet relationship. As if we were young lovers we decided to fly over to their side of the water for an evening of cheese steaks, Rocky Balboa and live music. On July 6th 2009 KRAAK set up a show at Kung Fu Necktie. The Flemish Primitives met the Philly Elite: Jack Rose, Meg Baird, Kurt Vile and U.S. Girls. To celebrate our love we also pressed this very awesome 7” with four exclusive tracks!
Master finger picker JACK ROSE is the mastodont of Philadelphia. His mix of drone infused raags, bluegrass and acoustic folk is as sweet as a crate of Saison Dupont. “mr. Rose visits Washington D.C” is a live improvisation from the first solo tour Jack did with Six Organs of Admittance and Fürsaxa. It’s a raw piece dating from before his debut album.
KURT VILE’s hit singles were the big surprise of the most recent Kraak festival. Classic American road pop and nineties melancholia. The dude likes his Duvel cold. “I Wanted Everything” is an amazing new song in the melodic Vile tradition, containing the lyrical one liner of the year “I ain’t never going to go to work no more”.
U.S. GIRLS is Megan Remy. With a reel-to-reel tapedeck, some delay and distorted vocals she became the Philadelphian queen of ultra lo-fi pop music. Sounds like tunnelvision Kinks after serious car accident caused by too much Orval. With “A day at the races” she delivers the shortest but most mind frying track on this 4-way split.
We never had MEG BAIRD solo on stage here, but we did admire her when she came around with her psych folk friends of Espers. On her own she’s pretty much digging in the same zone: sixties folk, traditionals, hippy love and tea OD. “Wave crashed on rocks” is a cover of British eighties rock unit Felt.

Deze cd werd uitgegeven naar aanleiding van This Place Place is Dreaming Rethinking and Transfiguring the Sites and Sounds of Brussels, een interdisciplinair creatieproject samengesteld door Ive Stevenheydens dat op verschillende locaties plaatsvond van 15 tot 23 oktober, in de loop van het argosfestival 2004.
Dat project bundelde op Brussel geënte installaties, performances, concerten, lezingen en interactieve ‘acties’ van Belgische en internationale (geluids)kunstenaars waarvan er achtien op deze cd zijn verzameld. This Place is Dreaming is nauw verbonden met de sonoriteit van de Belgische hoofdstad. Zo doken Heimir Björgulfsson, Yannis Kyriakides, Stilluppsteypa en Olivier Capparos in de interviewarchieven van Brussel behoort ons toe/Bruxelles nous appartient. Hun hier verzamelde remixes van verhalen van Brusselaars die vertellen over hun stad, de urbanisatie en hun relaties met de architectuur, de straat en met elkaar, staan garant voor divergente muzikale positioneringen. Francisco Lopez richtte met TMRX, Martiens Go Home, Johan Vandermaelen en Building Transmissions een gedeelde soundpool op van Brusselse veldpnames onder de naam Brussels Sonic Matter. In een concert muteerden de vijf, elk volgens hun idiosyncratische technieken, andermans geluiden. Hoewel op deze cd sommigen van Brussels Sonic Matter tracks op basis van de soundpool leveren en anderen solowerk presenteren, zijn alle geluiden uit de Brusselse sonoriteit afkomstig. Ook aMute maakte een track die steunt op klanken uit het dagelijkse Brusselse leven. De compilatie biedt ook een inkijk in het werkproces van de aan het project verbonden kunstenaars. Dat geldt voor bijdrages van Justin Bennett, Mark Bain, Angelo Vermeulen, Emilio Lopez-Menchero en Maria Blondeel erg letterlijk: hun tracks vloeien voort uit proefopstellingen voor hun installaties en acties voor het argosfestival 2004. Tot slot bevat This Place is Dreaming niet enkel gemuteerde geluiden uit Brussel. Met klanken uit andere steden en landen slaan de artiesten Hildegard Westerkamp (India), Aki Onda (Parijs) en Yuko Nexus6 (Japan en Italië) een brug naar andere sferen en culturen.

Deze compilatie is het werk van maanden. Het is niet enkel een samenwerking tussen acht labels, nl. (K-RAA-K)3, Ecstatic Peace, BWVD, Swill Radio, Polymony en Freedom Form ...
Belangrijker nog is dat de compilatie een overzicht biedt van wat er zoal gaande is binnen de improvisatie-gitaar-noise scene. De compilatie onderscheidt zich van andere verzamelwerken door de lengte van de nummers die variëren van 8 tot 24 minuten. Als we het over gitaarimpro hebben dan kan je moeilijk om invloeden van Nieuw-Zeeland heen. Daarom mogen Flies Inside The Sun (Kranky, Mentonymic) en Surface of the Earth (Corpus Hermeticum, Fusetron) aan de aftrap verschijnen met hun alles vernietigende feedbackende drones, vrije drumstijl en hun compleet vrije expressie. Ook van de partij is Mr. Matthew Bower, aka Sunroof. In het verleden bracht hij enkele ruw om zich heen schoppende noise-anthems uit onder het pseudoniem Total, maar deze keer is het volume aangepast aan de koude winteravonden. Diegenen die zijn werk op VHS wisten te pruimen zullen hier plat voor gaan. Een andere Britse aanwezige is de band Ashtray Navigations (Siltbreeze, Selfabuse, Diskono, etc). Het is waarschijnlijk een van de meest onderschatte talenten die er rond lopen. Hun gitaarmanipulaties en field recordings kan je herkennen uit duizenden. Een stap vooruit voor Mr. Todd. Vervolgens zorgen Bradley/Campbell en John Godbert (beide Giardia) voor een wervelende ervaring. Dit sluit nauw aan bij hun vorig werk, maar wie ons een beetje kent weet dat ze een van onze favoriete artiesten zijn. In dezelfde lijn ligt Dr. Gretchen’s Musical Weightlifting Program waarmee hij alle academische blabla over strijkkwartetten aan zijn laars lapt. De afsluiter komt van K Salvatore. Zoemende versterkers waar tussen een piano zich een weg baant, maar halverwege door het dak valt en in een loop van drones terechtkomt. Hij mag misschien wel de minst bekende zijn, maar met deze track verdient hij zeker een plaatsje in de galerij der groten. Misschien handig om weten is het feit dat de (K-RAA-K)3-editie er compleet anders uit ziet dan de rest. Deze compilatie is uiterst beperkt en wordt maar een keer geperst. Alle tracks zijn exclusief en nergens anders te vinden.

Een jaar na de ‘Meet the Philly elite’ 7” komt er een vervolg in de 4-way split serie. Dit keer nemen Köhn en Alien Radio het met hun nieuwe era synthesizercomposities op tegen de postpop van Peaking Lights en Ducktails.
KÖHN is Jürgen De Blonde. Hij werd ooit de ‘vader van de Belgische elektronica’ genoemd. Na de dubbel-cd ‘Koen’ uit 2002 begon hij zich vooral te focussen op muziek voor dans en theater. Vorig jaar maakte hij een comeback met ‘We need more space in the cosmos’, een langspeelplaat vol epische space age composities. ‘U C I M’ ligt in dezelfde lijn: trancey en neo-kosmisch. PEAKING LIGHTS is het duo Indra Dunis (ex-Numbers) en Aaron Coynes. “Creatures of day creatures at night” is pure zomerpop. De gebruikelijke synths en drumloops verdwijnen meer naar de achtergrond en maken plaats voor fuzzy calypsoriffs. Dunis’ vocale romantiek klinkt zoet als een Brian Wilsonliedje. Sci-fi soft pop! Ulf Schütte speelt in Datashock en Phantom Horse, maar komt vooral tot muzikale hoogtepunten als hij thuis alleen met modulaire synths zit te knoeien. ALIEN RADIO zit in de traditie van Conny Planck, Delia Derbyshire, Dick Raaijmakers en Ursula Bogner. ‘Gedanke und Ahnung’ is bliepsynthronica en klinkt als een uit de hand gelopen schets uit een sonich onderzoeksproject. Real Estate, Alex Bleeker & The Freaks, Predator Vision, Parasails… allemaal bands van of met Matt Mondanile. De laatste drie jaar ging hij echter in snel tempo de wereld rond als DUCKTAILS. Zijn neo-tropische popmuziek wordt vaak gelinkt aan een beweging waartoe ook Dolphins Into The Future, James Ferraro en de Not Not Fun crew horen. ‘Sprinter’ is een repetitief, melancholisch popnummer en zowat het meest ‘indie’ dat we al van Ducktails gehoord hebben.

Manoeuvers, the new 4-way split in the KRAAK 7” series, offers four short trips through the great cosmic minds of Rene Hell, Jonas Reinhardt, Jonathan Fitoussi and Bear Bones, Lay Low. Although all four artists use analog synthesizers as the prime source for their repetitive, mind expanding compositions they show the broad variety in which retro-futuristic music has evolved in recent years. Hell opens the gates of modern trance meditation with some weirdly pulsating brain candy. It is followed by some eastern vibes in Bear Bones, Lay Low’s track, bringing to mind a Turkish Alan Vega in liquid salvia fields. On the b-side French composer Jonathan Fitoussi injects the cosmic into minimalism with an almost Glassian atmosphere. Kranky-artist Jonas Reinhardt closes the gates again spacing on craftmanship in a slowed down dancey style kraut track with ethnic synth melodies, in the vein of some Sky-releases from the 80s.
