In 2004 Richard Crandell made his appearance with an incredibly beautiful album "Mbira Magic" on John Zorn's Tzadik label. We realized that kalimbas are excellent instruments for a good party after first hearing Konono No. 1 and their friends. On the other side of the spectrum the little box also produces melancholic minimal compositions that focus on the purity of the sound and the beauty of the instrument itself. Crandell gets the maximum out of it, in a very subtle way. We are weary of using the adjective "dreamy" since the patent of Iceland, but this is as dreamy as it gets... euhm, heaven. Eat that, Mùm!

In 2004 maakte Richard Crandell het schitterende album "Mbira Magic" voor John Zorns Tzadiklabel. Dat duimpiano's uitstekende ingrediënten zijn voor een feestje, is al meermaals bewezen door Konono No.1 en geestesgenoten. Aan de andere kant van het spectrum zorgt het doosje ook voor minimale composities die meer focussen op de pure klank en de schoonheid van instrument op zich. Het adjectief "dromerig" durven we al sinds het patent van Ijsland niet meer gebruiken, maar is hier absoluut op z'n plaats. Eat that, Mùm!

Que les mbiras, kalimbas et likembes soient les instruments par excellence d?une bonne fête a déjà été prouvé par Konono No.1 et leurs confrères. De l'autre côté du spectre on retrouve Crandell qui démontre que ce petit morceau de bois peut aussi créer des compositions minimales et mélancoliques.
