ANTI-NATURALS
The Anti-Naturals collective have been producing films for 8 years. As with all Anti-Natural projects, the films reflect the theories and aesthetics of the Anti-Naturals. Comical, eerie, breathtaking, uncomfortable, beautiful - all can be applied at times to the films of the Anti-Naturals. Most noticeable are the unique aesthetic choices made for both the visual elements and musical selections. A variety of techniques are used to produce the images seen in the films, but technique is never favored over aesthetic content.

Het Anti-Naturals collectief maken sinds een achttal jaar films. Zoals met alle projecten van Anti-Naturtals, schemeren de theorieën en de esthetiek van het collectief erin door. Komisch, angstaanjagend, adembenemend, ongemakkelijk, prachtig - dit alles kan toegepast worden op de het werk van de Anti-Naturals. Het bijzonderste zijn de unieke esthetische keuzes die ze voor zowel het visuele als het auditieve maken. Een uitgebreid arsenaal aan technieken worden gebruikt om beelden te maken die nooit eerder gezien geweest zijn, maar techniek wordt nooit verheerlijkt.

Forst is a portrayal. The documentary tells about a forest in the middle of Europe far from the urban world and from civilisation which is home to a peculiar community of the banished. It is a world for the stranded. A diffuse system that still has total control makes sure that this world doesn´t show itself, that it doesn´t pop up in our reality and become a disturbance. In Forst the banished proclaim their own truth. They slowly recall their identity as political refugees and start to make plans for their escape...

November - Hito Steyerl (DE) 25' / 2004
A friend, Andrea Wolf, played a lead role in a feminist martial arts film shot by Steyerl. Wolf turned to political praxis and went to fight along the PKK where she was killed in 1998 and is regarded as an immortal revolutionary. Steyerl examines the spectrum of interrelations between territorial power politics and individual forms of resistance. Memories and accounts provoke the filmmaker to engage in a fundamental reflexion: She comes to understand how fact and fiction are intertwined in the global discourse. November could be an elegy to a distant friend, an essay on the construction of mythic identities, and a commentary on the defunct ideologies of revolution.

Every city has its secrets. Rotenburg, a provincial town nearby Bremen is no exception. The tragicness of the story seems to be an infinite torment, but when there’s no history, you don’t exist. Old public buildings, green spaces, individual houses. The images don’t enable us to penetrate the surface. But voices help us, answer one another. These voices list the succesive destructions – fires, wars, … We become witnesses of the banalities and horrors of reconstruction.

Een wereld voor gestranden. Een diffuus systeem dat totale controle heeft over zijn inwoners, en ervoor zorgt dat de gemeenschap verborgen blijft, niet opduikt in de realiteit en de orde verstoort. In Forst vertellen de bannelingen hun waarheid. Ze herinneren zich beetje bij beetje dat ze politieke vluchtelingen zijn en maken plannen voor hun ontsnapping…

Een vriendin, Andrea Wolf, speelde de hoofdrol in een feministische martial arts film gemaakt door Steyerl. Wolf’s engagement dreef haar naar de praktijk, ze sloot zich aan bij de PKK en werd in 1998 gedood. Ze wordt er nu als martelaar, een onsterfelijke revolutionair, gezien. Steyerl onderzoekt de onderlinge verbanden tussen territoriale politiek en vormen van individueel verzet. Herinneringen en verslagen dwingen de maker tot een fundamentele vraagstelling. Ze ziet hoe feiten en fictie zich verstrengelen in globale discours. November kan een klaaglied voor een vriend, een essay over de constructie van mythische identiteit, en een commentaar op achterhaalde revolutionaire ideologieën zijn.

Elke stad heeft zijn geheimen, ook Rotenburg, een provinciestadje in de buurt van Bremen. De tragiek van het verhaal lijkt een eeuwenlange kwelling te zijn, maar zonder geschiedenis kan een stad niet bestaan. Oude openbare gebouwen, groene zones en woonhuizen. De beelden lijken ondoordringbaar. Maar stemmen helpen ons, beantwoorden elkaar. Ze sommen opeenvolgende vernietigingen op - brand, oorlog, … We worden getuigen van de banaliteit en gruwel van de heropbouw.

failed love affairs and an obsessive urge to collect.
What I'm Looking For - Shelly Silver (USA) 15' / 2005
A personal ad by the artist reads: "I am looking for people who would like to be
photographed in public revealing some part of themselves (physical or otherwise). No
other relationship will take place outside of being photographed." This
15-minute high definition video narrates an adventure – a somehow
fictionalized version of strange intimacies or connections between the
subjects and the artist. It is the tale of the interface between public
space and the Internet, photography and moving images, desire and the act of
seeing – and of a woman who photographs men.
Can you feel it - Michael Gibson & The Jacksons (USA) 4' / 1981
The Jacksons created a mini-movie music video to accompany their Triumph album which
culminates in computer-enhanced images of the Jacksons as benevolent giants sprinkling
glittering magical dust over the world.
Perpetual Motion in the Land of Milk and Honey - AL+AL (UK) 6' / 2004
Perpetual Motion in the Land of Milk and Honey is about one of the AL's
grandfather, James Brown, an inspired engineer and inventor. The film simulates
his quest for the secret of perpetual motion with an end goal of giving free "power
to the people". During a telephone conversation with the Lamb of God, Britney
Spears sabotages this attempt to discover the laws of nature in order to further her
own hunt for infinity. This conflict results in a series of alchemistic events,
concluding in a land flooded with milk and honey.
Like earlier works this piece is chock-full of symbolism, new-age-isms and references to
Hieronymus Bosch, classical mythology and pop culture. ‘Perpetual Motion in
the Land of Milk and Honey’ is a digital video epic in which the makers seem
to criticize the modernist conception of science and encroaching philistinism in an
increasingly scary and capitalist society.
Driftwood - Oliver Payne & Nick Relph (UK) 23' / 1999
Sincerely and overwhelmingly romantic, Driftwood pulls focus in and around
the inner city of London, questioning the uses of urban archeology and
monitoring civil behavioural devices. Skateboarding's appropriation of
the city's urban environment is the focal point of a psycho-geographical
journey that flickers between the macro and the micro, the personal and
political, utopianism and reality.

het verleden. mislukte liefdes en een obsessieve verzamelwoede.
What I'm Looking For - Shelly Silver (USA) 15' / 2005
De kunstenares plaatste een contactadvertentie met de tekst: “Ik ben
op zoek naar mensen die zich in het openbaar willen laten fotografen terwijl
ze iets van zichzelf ‘blootgeven’ (letterlijk of figuurlijk).
Afgezien van het nemen van de foto’s zal er zich geen relatie ontwikkelen.”
Deze 15 minuut lange High Definition video doet verslag van een
avontuur – een op een bepaalde manier gefictionaliseerde versie van
vreemde intimiteiten en verbindingen tussen de kunstenares en haar onderwerp,
de mensen die op haar advertentie reageerden. Het is het verhaal van
de ‘interface’ tussen publieke ruimte en het internet,
tussen fotografie en bewegend beeld, tussen verlangen en ‘het
kijken’ – en het verhaal van een vrouw die naar mannen kijkt.
Can you feel it - Michael Gibson & The Jacksons (USA) 4' / 1981
De Jacksons maakten een miniclip op video bij hun album Triumph dat een

welwillende reuzen die de wereld met glinsterende magische stof besprenkelen.

Perpetual Motion in the Land of Milk and Honey’ gaat over James Brown,
grootvader van één van de twee Al’s van Al + Al, die
een bezield ingenieur en uitvinder is. De film verbeeldt zijn queeste naar het
geheim van de eeuwigdurende beweging waarmee hij de macht aan het volk wil geven.
Tijdens een telefoongesprek met het Lam Gods saboteert Britney Spears echter zijn
poging om de natuurwetten verder te doorgronden ten faveure van haar eigen jacht
naar onsterfelijkheid. Het conflict leidt tot een diverse voorvallen van
alchemistische aard en resulteert uiteindelijk in een land dat overstroomd wordt door melk en honing.
Dit werk staat, net als eerdere werken van Al + Al bol van de symboliek,
new-age-ism en verwijzingen naar Hieronymus Bosch, klassieke mythologie en popcultuur.

epos waarin de makers kritiek lijken te uiten op de modernistische opvattingen over wetenschap
en het oprukkende materialisme in een onze kapitalistische samenleving.
Driftwood - Oliver Payne & Nick Relph (UK) 23' / 1999
Het oprecht en overweldigend romantische Driftwood trekt de aandacht
naar en rond de binnenstad van Londen, waarbij het gebruik van stedelijke archeologie in twijfel wordt getrokken en apparaten om burgers te monitoren worden gevolgd. De verovering van de stad door skateboarders is het centrale punt van een psycho-geografische reis die zich heen en weer beweegt tussen het macro en het micro, het persoonlijke en het politieke, utopisme en realiteit.
