Kaas & Wijn & Ottomaans-Amerikaanse muziek

Before the Golden Age of Americana on Record, immigrants from the dissolving Ottoman Empire were singing their joys and sorrows to disc in New York City. The virtuosic musicians from Anatolia, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Levant living in the U.S. who recorded between WWI and the Depression are presented here across two discs, along with a third disc of masterpieces they imported as memories on shellac-and-stone. The intermingled lives and musics of Christians, Jews, and Muslims represent Middle Eastern culture as it existed within the U.S. a century ago.

Ian Nagoski is music researcher, musician, writer and record producer. His avocation is inspiring people who love music to love it more. In 2007 Ian released ‘Black Mirror’, a collection of gripping folk and devotional music recorded between 1918 and 1954 in Syria, Bali, Scotland, Yugoslavia, Cameroon, and a dozen or so other countries. It was released on Grammy-winning label Dust-to-Digital. Nagoski followed Black Mirror with two more international collections ‘A String of Pearls, Brass Pins & Match Heads’ for his own Canary
imprint, as well as an LP of the under-recognized and brilliant 1920s Greek singer Marika Papagika.

DARKSMITH OF CALIFORNIA + JORIS VAN DE MOORTEL

Tom Darksmith maakt verstilde tapecollages met lofi fieldrecordings van bij hem thuis. De slepende musique concrète-achtige geluidsdocumenten voorziet hij live van diep menselijke performances. Meer info, auditieve en visuele lekkernij op zijn momcostume.blogspot.com en geweldige releases op labels als Hanson en Kye. De man haat trouwens live performances, wat alles alleen maar ten goede komt.

Räjäyttäjät in de Kinky Star

Onuitspreekbaar, maar onweerstaanbaar. Een Fins powertrio dat ouderwetse rock-‘n-roll speelt. Het beste wat het land momenteel te bieden heeft volgens Jan Anderzén (Tomutonttu, Kemialliset Ystävät). De cassettes waren alvast veelbelovend, met Finse covers van onder andere Can, The Stooges en Träd, Gräs, och Stenar!

Roscoe Mitchell + Sheldon Siegel

In de jaren zestig stond saxofonist / clarinetist Roscoe Mitchell aan de basis van de Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (die als adagium “Great Black Music, Ancient to the Future” hanteerden) en het Art Ensemble of Chicago. Dit combo werd legendarisch door onder andere hun BYG Actuel uitgaves en hun bijdrage aan Brigitte Fontaines Comme à la Radio. Mitchell is nog steeds dezelfde begeesterde, compromisloze muzikant, die ook solo uw tere geest uit elkaar puzzelt.

Mitchell speelt in kwartet met Sheldon Siegel, het meest avontuurlijke free improv trio in België. Nooit bang om conventies op te blazen, altijd energetisch en eerlijk. Pure bliss.

Sing Star Holocaust

Op het Blackest Rainbowlabel verschijnt een dezer de nieuwe lp van het Britse duo Vampire Blues dat met gitaar en harmonium een weg zoekt tussen mantrische drones, oude muziek en tune-in-drop-out-improvisatie. Vampire Blues verschuilt zich in de scene waar ook The Hunter Gracchus en Harappian Night Recordings zich begeven. Op de rand van vrije freak outs en melancholische nachtmerriemuziek.

Banana Head is het lo-fi popproject van Zully Adler, labelmanager van het Goaty Tapes label. Het Brusselse Lexie Disques geeft binnenkort een 7” uit van de man. Deze show is de Antwerpse release show voor deze uitgave.
