After we discovered the cd “Le Brame Des Cerfs, Forêts d’Automne / Rutting Red Deers” on the Frémaux & Associés imprints, we immediately fell in love with the sounds of French deers. Deers are the most innovative experimental musicians of the century, taking much from modern black metal vocalists and contemporary sound poetry. In the Walloon forests they hide as well for unholy and highly erotic rituals. This will be the bus trip of the year, heading to the heart of the Ardennes for a long walk through nature in search of nonconformist deer sounds with the local forester

The Belgians! What the hell is going on there these days? Besides coldwave reissues and French fleeing for cheaper apartments, a lot. KRAAK, Ultra Eczema, El-G, Ignatz and their cohorts have been continually emitting some of the most alien and open-minded sounds as of late, and KRAAK´s new split LP of Razen and Sheldon Siegel is a pretty splendid splattered platter. The SS side is a pleasing bit of live cello, percussion, tapes, and sax that sounds like a more humid swampland version of the ICP contingent, but I especially dig the brassy blare of Razen, the duo of Bart Reekmans and Brecht Ameel on assorted instruments they admittedly never knew how to play beforehand. Brass, bouzouki, bagpipes, duduk, metallic percussion and Ethiopiques licks meld with some Highlands stomping (thinking the ESP Cromagnon LP at times on "Rammelaargong"), swelling arrangements and a general buggy ethno vibe. Brecht makes music for dance companies (and from the sound of it has had a good listen to some of the comparative 70s Japanese dance/psych meetings of Teriyama, Tokyo Kid Brothers etc.) and apparently has some solo stuff on the way under the name Brlaâb. Grab yerself Razen´s "<a href="http://blogfiles.wfmu.org/BT/Razen_-_Razen_Zand.mp3">Razend Zand</a>" (MP3).

Hardly any words this time but the names of the different designers and of our curator Wouter Van Haeleemeesch. We´re taking a short Ruis-brake and will be back early September with more musical facts, brought to you by the inhibatants of the Lowlands.

New Ignatz cd out now on Staalplaat ´Mort Aux Vaches´ series. Live session at Berry Kamer´s Dwars program at VPRO. KRAAK is working on a new Ignatz lp as well, compiling the best tracks of his cassette releases. Will be released after summer...

On Friday Ignatz plays at the Kinky Star in Ghent. On May 22nd his new band Beautiful Band plays at the RTT in Brussels with The Psychic Paramount and Das Os. <i>´Beautiful Band [Laurent of Rot (guitars), Bram Devens of Ignatz (vocals & guitars), Paul Labreque of Sunburned Hand of the Man (bass), and the drummer Patrick Calvelo of either Willo the Wisp or Starfield Season] takes elements from older bands (lots and lots of Velvet Underground, quite a bit of Crazy Horse, the wahwah-style of Julian Cope, a touch of postpunk and/or postrock), so no doubt about the talent present.´</i>
