Belgian label (K-RAA-K)3 had tended to be unfairly overlooked despite its artistic connections with both 12k and intr_Version, but if there�s any justice, this excellent collection of sonic geography ought to correct that. Evolving out of last year�s This Place is Dreaming arts festival, the contributors work with the sonorities of everyday urban life in Brussels and beyond. This takes the form of remixing oral testimonies, distoriting the frequencies emitted by the decreasing light intensity of an urban sunset, and sampling the sounds from one of the city�s swimming pools. Mysterious disembodied voices utter detached syllables (Olivier Capparos�s "Conversation"), wires hum in empty buildings (Justin Bennett�s "Berlaymont Dreaming"), church bells bang out of tune and time in a growing pattern of dissonance (Yuko Nexus6s "Translation of Sightseeing"). The ability of human experience to escape the grid-like patterns of urban planners is paramount here.
Of the bigger hitters, Francisco Lopez offers an excerpt of "Untitled #164", which is typically subdued. Stilluppsteypa�s "The important Little Man" is a fogshrouded drone with fragmented, ghostly speech lurking at its fringes. Amute�s "When Clyclic Brussels Gave Up" follows his excellent Intr-Version full-lenght by sweeping field recordings into a gathering storm of haunting guitar notes that approach the overpowering awa of Mogwai.
With This Place is Dreaming, the topography of Brussels becomes an unfamiliar, indeterminate terrain of scattered existence. A powerful and rewarding series of anti-narratives. - John Gibson, Grooves may 2005

This Place is Dreaming (K-RAA-K CD) is subtitled "Rethinking And Transfiguring The Sites And Sounds Of Brussels". An accompanying note indicates that the city-wide project from which the CD erose, Brussels Sonic Matter, curated as part of Argos festival 2004, was an attempt to "convert Brussels� sonic reality into music". Maybe that�s true of the majority of the pieces. But Emilio Lopez-Menchero�s "Swimming Rotunda (Excerpt) is an unadulterated field recording (the challenge to the listerner: find the music in the everyday?). And former Stillupsteypa member Heimir Bj�rg�lfsson cheats somewhat by merely grafting music - his electronics and the ringing chords of Curver�s electric guitars - onto interview material culled from the spoken word archives of Brussel BeHoort Ons Toe (Brussels Belongs To Us). These inconsistencies don�t really matter. This Place Is Dreaming is a fascinating collection of sound collages and soundscapes, some of which, by Yannis Kyriakides, Olivier Caparos, Justin Bennett and Maria Blondeel have been modified till the pips squeak. Four of the 18 contributors (Hildegard Westerkamp, Mark Bain, Aki Onda and Yuko Nexus6) draw on material from India, Amsterdam, Paris and Japan/Italy. Is Brussels, a cosmopolitan city, dreaming of the distant origings of some of its residents, or are they aural holiday snapshots? Im Oktober letzten Jahres befand sich Br�ssel im Ausnahmezustand: unz�hlige Konzerte, Workshops, Lesungen, Soundinstallationen und Konzerte �ber und zur belgischen Hauptstadt fanden statt. Achtzehn der ungew�hnlichen Arbeiten des j�hrlich statfindenden Argos Festivals liegen nun extrem sch�n pr�sentiert aug CD vor. Heimir Bj�rguldsson und Yannis Kyriakides sprangen z.B. tief ins Interviewarchiv von "Brussel behoort ons toe" und zernagten allt�gliches Geblubber in exotische Soundvernetzungen. TMRX und Francisco Lopez pr�sentieren hungegen auf igre eigene Art reine Feldaufnahmen aus der Stadt. Der Kulturkreis wird zerbrochen wenn sich Aki Onda als Soundbotschafter aus Paris und Hildegard Westerkamp aus Indien dazugesellen und versuchen, das universelle Treiben der Kulturen einzufangen. Eine beeindruckend gut kuratierte Compilation, auf der sich definitiv alle in H�chstform zeigen - top release. ED ***** (24-01-2005)

Deze in een mooie dvd-hoes uitgegeven cd is het gevolg van een project genaamd This Place is Dreaming � Rethinking and Transfiguring the Sites and Sounds of Brussels, dat afgelopen oktober tijdens het Argosfestival in Brussel plaatsvond. Verschillende kunstenaars gingen op zoek naar de geluiden van de hoofdstad en vonden meer. Met veel precisie worden hier details binnen de omgevingsgeluiden van Brussel ge�soleerd van het geheel en naar voren geheven. Door deze details vervolgens binnen een gesloten stuk (het nummer op de cd) met elkaar te verbinden ontstaan geheel andere sonische mogelijkheden en werelden. Een theoretische referentie naar �vluchtlijnen� � la Deleuze is in deze context natuurlijk altijd mogelijk, maar overbodig om de po�tische kracht van zo�n strategie te kunnen begrijpen.
De bijdragen worden zowel door bekende als voor mij onbekende kunstenaars geleverd. Mensen als Mark Bain, Francisco L�pez, Yannis Kyriakides, Yuko Nexus6, Hildegard Westerkamp en Aki Onda zijn natuurlijk al een tijdje vaste referentiepunten binnen de soundscape-traditie en experimentele electronica. De laatste drie presenteren trouwens geen bewerking van sonisch Brussel, maar respectievelijk van Japan en Itali�, India en Parijs. Vanuit esthetisch oogpunt bekeken is vooral de centrale rol van de menselijke stem opvallend: geluiden van schreeuwende en zwemmende kinderen (Emilio Lopez-Menchero), stemmen uit de interviewarchieven van �Brussel behoort ons toe� (Heimir Bj�rg�lfsson, Yannis Kyriakides, Olivier Capparos en Stillupsteypa) of conversaties (Angelo Vermeulen). Het geeft aan de gehele verzamelaar een urbane lokalisering mee die vooral door deze stemmen wordt geconstrueerd. (bas van heur) (20-12-2004)

This CD is produced in association with This Place is Dreaming ��� Rethinking and Transfiguring the Sites and Sounds of Brussels, a project for interdisciplinary creations curated by Ive Stevenheydens and presented at a variety of locations between October 15th and 23th, during the argosfestival 2004. The project brought installations, performances, concerts, lectures and interactive 'actions' by Belgian and worldwide (sound) artists, all focused on the city of Brussels. Eighteen of these are included on this CD
