In March 2014, the American composer Robert Ashley passed away. He was, together with Alvin Lucier, David Behrman and Gordon Mumma part of the influencial Sonic Arts union. He leaves us with a body of work which is massive, but also highly personal. It balances in between pop-art, spoken word, electronica, performance, minimalisme, conceptualism and video opera. With his unique and imploring voice he guides the listener through alienating stories of American Urbania.
Bariton singer Thomas Buckner will bring a tribute to this intriguing and strong figure in musical avant-garde with a selection of Ashley’s most recent compositions.
Over more then 40 years, Thomas Buckner dedicates himself to the world of new and improvised music. He studied at the legendary Metropolitan Opera bariton singer Martial Singher, but extended his classical training to experimental music. He is an expert on the body of work of Ashley, as he contributed at several operas by Ashley.
Robert Ashley left a substantial impression on KRAAK’s own electronic avant-garde composers and poets Lieven Martens Moana and Floris Vanhoof. As a tribute they will write new pieces, performed by them and the master students of the Conservatory of Ghent.
