Jean Grémillons lost pleyela pieces

The French film maker and violin player Jean Grémillon is one of the only film makers — together with Chaplin — who wrote the music for their films. He considered sound and image as equal elements, sometimes he even wrote the music before filming.

This evening highlights Tour au large, a lost film for which Grémillon composed pieces for the Pleyela, or an autimatic piano. The avant-garde film was presented for the first time at Théâtre du Vieux Colombier (Paris) in 1927. It was the first time a pianola was synchronized with the projector.

Rex Lawson is a collector and connaisseur of the oeuvre for the Pleyela. He discovered the lost rolls which accompanied the lost movie. On this evening he will present the rolls, together with key pieces for the Pleyela. The evening will end with La petite lise, an essential movie in the oeuvre by Grémillon.

This evening is a part of a overview of the works by Grémillon. Over two months Cinematek Brussels shows a selection of his most important films.
