ism BOZAR

Jacques Bekaert is a Belgian-born composer, currently living in Bankok. Ever since the seventies he is related to an American / International school of composers and friends that include great minds such as David Behrman, Robert Ashley, David Rosenboom and Takehisa Kosugi. Bekaert studied at the APELAC Studios with Henri Pousseur, befriended John Cage and Henri Chopin and composed for a.o. Thomas Buckner. His homeland seems to slowly forget about this great composer. With the screening of Iimura’s two films for which Bekaert composed the music and a program of old and new piano work by Bekaert we would like to contribute in bringing back the attention he deserves. His music will be played by Flemish pianist Daan Vandewalle, who studied at Mills College with Alvin Curran and recorded Gordon Mumma’s ‘Music for Solo Piano (1960-2001)’ for New World Records in 2008.

For over four decades Thomas Buckner has dedicated himself to the world of new and improvised music. A former student of the legendary Metropolitan Opera baritone, Martial Singher, he was trained in the classical tradition and has continued throughout his distinguished career to broaden the scope of his vocal styles, specializing in a wide range of experimental music. Buckner will perform Bekaert’s ‘A Distant Harmony’, to be found on his 1998 record for Lovely Music, ‘Inner Journey’.
